چکیده

To investigate the safety level of softdrink bottled in plastic, the amount of antimony (Sb) existing in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles was examined. The Sb concentrations in beverages and polyester resin itself were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GFAAS). A detection limit (3σ) of 0.4 μg/L was achieved. PET bottles were classified into five groups based on their uses: (A) pressure-tight bottles for carbonated drinks; (B) bottles for aseptic cold filling mainly used for drinking waters; (C) bottles for aseptic hot filling mainly used for noncarbonated cold drinks; (D) heat-resistant bottles for hot teas; and (E) bottles for alcohol drinks. 70% of PET bottles were categorized into group C. The concentration of Sb observed from PET resin ranged from 6.08 to 216.49 mg/kg, while the range of Sb contaminated in bottled solutions was from 0.26 to 1.55 μg/L. The detected Sb amounts from all drinks were below the guidelines recommended for drinking water of Japanese standard at 2 μg/L, and 90% of bottles solutions contained Sb lower than 1μg/L. The contaminated Sb in drink solutions mainly came from the Sb2O3 used in the manufacturing of PET as a catalyst. The measurement of Sb existing in various parts of the bottle shows no significant difference. However, the storage of the pressure-tight PET bottle at higher temperatures had a significant effect on the time-dependent release of antimony, while the sunlight had no effect on leaching of Sb from PET at ambient temperature. However, the amounts leached following 133 days at storage condition 25, 40, 55, and 70 oC, and with/without sunlight were less than Japanese standard.

Antimony leaching from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic used for bottled drinking water.

Antimony is a regulated contaminant that poses both acute and chronic health effects in drinking water. Previous reports suggest that polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics used for water bottles in Europe and Canada leach antimony, but no studies on bottled water in the United States have previously been conducted. Nine commercially available bottled waters in the southwestern US (Arizona) ...

Evaluation of the Migration of Antimony from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Plastic Used for Verjuice and Lemon Juice Packaging

The migration of antimony (Sb) from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottling for acidic juices have been assessed in this study. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) method was chosen for antimony content determination. Experiments were undertaken at different conditions (15, 25, 35, 45days at 25, 50°C for first use bottle, reused bottle). Two different acidic juices (lemon j...

Migration Assessment and Modeling from Poly Ethylene Terephthalate (PET) Packaging Containers into Soft Drinks

Background & objectives: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers have many applications in the food industry. Although there are numerous advantages for PET it also has some disadvantages, one of which is the migration of materials from the container into the material inside. In this study, the effect of two factors of storage time and temperature on the migration rate was evaluated and mod...

Polyethylene Terephthalate May Yield Endocrine Disruptors

BACKGROUND Recent reports suggest that endocrine disruptors may leach into the contents of bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is the main ingredient in most clear plastic containers used for beverages and condiments worldwide and has previously been generally assumed not to be a source of endocrine disruptors. OBJECTIVE I begin by considering evidence that bottles made fr...

Speciation of antimony in PET bottles produced in Japan and China by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy.

The oxidation state and coordination environment of antimony (Sb) incorporated into polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles were estimated based on X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) at Sb K-edge. Prior to XAFS analyses, Sb concentrations in 177 PET bottles collected in Japan and China were determined, showing that 30.5% and 100% of Japanese and Chinese PET bottles, respectively, contained...
